Guelaguetza: July 17-24 & 24-1 Aug

Experience Oaxaca at its most Oaxacan.

Guelaguetza is the time of year when everything that this amazing state holds dear is lifted up and celebrated.

Parade of dancers in the streets of Oaxaca

Make it stand out

From Parades, to food, to mezcal to the way the city is decorated - the energy surrounds you and it’s impossible to not get caught up in it.

“This is not just a festival, it’s a living expression of the Oaxacan people”

During the Guelaguetza the 8 regions of the state of Oaxaca are brought together to share what makes them unique. There are 16 indigenous languages so you can imagine how many different dishes, dances, drinks and traditions exist within each community. This is the one time of year where you can see them come together under one roof.

Sharing and preserving of cultures is something that is taken very seriously in the state of Oaxaca and this festival is put on ‘by the people, for the people’ which means that every aspect of it is accessible to all (for free!)

Every Monday (lunes del cerro) in the auditorium there is a huge display of dancing and culture. Tickets go on sale in May and they are VERY hard to come by BUT because everything must be accessible there is also the ability to line up and enter for free (not for the weak as it involves getting in line at 3am!)

Never fear though because the streets are lined with parades and events. Last year when I was walking in Centro I saw 5 Parades entering the Square at the Same time! A cacophony of color, movement and music coming at us from every angle.

We host two weeks for the Guelaguetza at the SoMos CaSa (dates above). They run from Friday to Friday in order that you are here in Oaxaca to witness the big parades. If you join us for the latter week we offer a bonus day at no charge so this week runs from Fri-Sat!

What can you expect?

Think of it as a Classic Retreat with a whole lot of bonus activity… the parade, mole and mezcal festivals in town.. the ability to try food from all across the region… comparsas every time you leave the house… lots of spontaneous dancing in the streets… so much culture!

The SoMos CaSa is far enough away that it remains peaceful but close enough that you can be in the midst of everything within 15 mins!

We make sure that you get to fully enjoy this magical time of the year.
